Berberine is a bioactive compound extracted from a group of shrubs called Berberis. After ingestion, Berberine is absorbed into the bloodstream were it travels to different cells in the body. One of the main actions of Berberine is to activate an enzyme inside cells called AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) also referred to as a 'metabolic master switch', this enzyme plays a major role in regulating metabolism.
