Milk thistle (Silybum marianum) is a flowering plant whose seeds have been used in traditional European herbal practice for centuries. The active phytochemical group is a family of flavonolignans known collectively as silymarin, with silybin (also called silibinin) being the most studied individual component.
Our tablets use a high-strength 40:1 milk thistle seed extract — 100mg of extract concentrating 4,000mg of milk thistle seed — and are standardised to 80% silymarin content, meaning each tablet delivers a full 80mg of silymarin and approximately 30mg of silybin and isosilybin.
Standardisation is important with botanicals because the natural concentration of active compounds in plant material varies significantly by batch, growing region and harvest conditions. A standardised extract ensures consistent dosing of the marker compounds tablet to tablet.
Milk thistle sits in EFSA's transitional “on hold” category for botanical health claims, so we do not make specific functional claims about it. It is used as a traditional herbal supplement.
Important: If you take prescription medication, consult your doctor before using milk thistle, as silymarin may affect the metabolism of certain drugs.
Made in the UK. Take one to two tablets daily with a meal.
