Selenium is an essential trace mineral that the body needs in very small amounts but absolutely depends on. It is a constituent of glutathione peroxidase and thioredoxin reductase — two of the body's key antioxidant enzymes — and is also required for normal thyroid hormone metabolism.
UK soils are generally low in selenium, and selenium intake from food has fallen in the UK over recent decades as more wheat is sourced from low-selenium European soils rather than the higher-selenium North American sources used historically.
Our tablets use L-selenomethionine — selenium incorporated into the amino acid methionine — which is the form selenium occurs in naturally in food. The body recognises L-selenomethionine as methionine and incorporates the selenium into its protein stores, resulting in better tissue selenium status than from inorganic forms such as sodium selenite or selenate.
